Author Snapshot

John Bowe

The Nobodies takes the reader to the fields of Immokalee, Florida, where underpaid (and often unpaid) illegal immigrants pick the produce for companies such as PepsiCo and Tropicana. Then to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where The John Pickle Company partners with an Indian and Kuwaiti firm to import workers from India, who have their documents confiscated and are paid $3 an hour. Then to Saipan, a U.S. territory in the Western Pacific that is exempt from American immigration controls, tariffs, and federal income tax, where 17,000 imported factory workers churn out garments for giants such as Gap and Target with "Made in America" labels.
