The Autumnal Interlude is an abrupt break from the world that Sasha and Lil know. It’s also a coming-of-age story for Autumn, who searches for her identity as both a queer woman and, eventually, a child of the pecan trees. What stood out to you about the many lives she leads? What do you think this interlude says about the journey we’re all on to discover who we are?

RE: What stood out to you in The ...

I think Autumn journey is one that helped her learn about herself. I don't think her path was linear but one that allowed her to have many experiences that pointed her in the direction of going back to Sasha. I think she questioned herself along the way and was even unsure about reconnecting with Sasha.

I think about my life today. There were ups and downs...questions to be answered. I am a healthier individual today because of them. I know compassion and caring are important virtues because I have experienced them throughout the years.

Could this be called "a learning curve"?

A play on words that most of the story is set in the autumn of the year and there is a major character named Autumn. I thought this section of the book served to help clarify the lengthy history of Autumn's life and history. The recurring statement: "I wish I could have told you" was a powerful testament to the challenges the not straight life has for the LGBTQ community. There was so much sexual tension between Sasha and Autumn from the tree house to all the other times that they were together. It was a tragedy it was incomplete for so many years. And did they ever really get together or was their reunification magical and wishful thinking?

I think that Autumn finally realized that she was a child of the trees.
We all grown at different times, it took Autumn a bit longer to know herself. She had to leave the town and orchards to begin to know who she was - only to return and be told by her dying father who she really was.
