Pale Jump and Strong Red Wolf are the same person. Why the different names?

Little Elk renames Jack Pale Jump as he comes to despise him and notices his “ jumpy” eye, it is given to mock Jack. Jack gave himself the name Strong-Red-Wolf as he had a much grander view of himself.

Jack sees himself as Strong-Red-Wolf, but he is really Pale Jump.

Jack called himself Strong-Red-Wolf. Little Elk named him Pale Jump because he had pale skin and an eye tic.

Stong-Red-Wolf was the name Jack gave himself. It was how he saw himself. Pale Jump was his name given by Little Elk because he was pale skinned and had twitchy eyes.

Different points of view about the strengths/weaknesses of a character.

Jack thought highly of himself and called himself Strong Red Wolf. He wanted to impress Two. Little Elk called him Pale Jump. He did not like him, knew he was not an Indian but a weak white nan and did not like that he was stocking Two.

Strong Red Wolf was Jack's name for himself. Pale Jump is Little Elk's name for him.

Jack would like to escape the moniker that is derogatory, so he calls himself Strong Red Wolf. It is easy to see that he would like to view himself in another, stronger, light rather than the weak Pale Jump.

Jack named himself Strong-Red-Wolf - and as Two said, that's not a real Indian name. Little Elk summed him up with the name Pale Jump - not a very inspiring name for a rather horrible man.

Jack saw himself as a Native American, and picked strong qualities to name himself. He thought he was strong, and outstanding like a red wolf. Pale Jump was the name given to him by Little Elf, who disliked him and and selected two of his weak features, his white, pale skin and his jumping eye.

Jack Elder sees himself or at least wants to be strong and animal-like so calls himself Strong Red Wolf. Little Elk sees him as he is, weak and ineffective, and gives him a name reflecting that, Pale Jump. Little Elk was my favorite character in the book.

I love that Little Elk renames him Pale Jump...funny!
