Luzia’s aunt tells her that “some people brought misery with them like weather.” What do you suppose she means? Do you think that’s true? Are there people in the novel that seem to bear this out?

Sure, some people have the ability to effect their surroundings and can effect the mood of the place. I think Victor is one of those people. He may be lucky for himself, but anyone who he comes in contact with who is a threat to him he crushes like a bug.

Fortun may be another. He seems to be able to manipulate peoples emotions with his ability and so he could fall into this category as well.

I don't think there could be a truer statement particularly with this cast of characters. Some people seem to bring the dark cloud wherever they go, whether from unlucky circumstances or bad choices. This cast has more than their fair share.

Some people seem to love misery. They think of the bad instead of the good. Pessimists rather than optimists.

Without a doubt, some people seem to flourish in misery.
I believe it is easier to criticize and blame others for your misfortune. This is a universal theme in literature.
How a person reacts to misfortune is the story.
Similarly, the drama queens and the perpetually negative, lead less satisfying lives .

There are those who thrive on thinking of themselves as victims. "Poor me" becomes their mode of conversation. There are some who will let the world know if they are having a bad day, being centered on their own unfortunate circumstance, and taking that cloud of gloom wherever they go. There are unfortunately others who assess the challenges,fears or concerns some others have for the purpose of capitalizing on those fears from a power or financial aspect. All have the ability to generate their own storm clouds even on a sunny day.

I often think of Eeyore —> “It could be worse. Not sure how.” Individuals who always have the dark clouds over their heads or play the part of the victim. They thrive on negativity.

We all know this is true. There are some people who walk with a darkness about them that they try to wrap around everyone they meet. Misery loves company.

I love this quote, and there are many people who fit the bill...those who thrive on drama, negativity, misery, etc. They really do affect those around them like the weather.
The opposite could be said of "sunny" people...those who cheer people up, encourage them, see the good in everything. Those types of folks can improve the mood in a room.

I think we've all encountered people like this in our lives. As far as the characters in this book, it is very true. It felt like Victor brought misery to all those around him every time he appeared. He was like a dark cloud moving around all of our characters.

There will always be pessimists. And for some a bad omen jsut seems to follow them, regardless of what they want. People of a lower status, those having more problems, are often looked upon as being more miserable than others.
