I would recommend it to people who like historical fiction and some fantasy.

I found this to be a well written character driven book, anyone who enjoys historical fiction would enjoy this -- I think the magic is vanilla enough that you don't have to love fantasy to love the book.

I am a historical fiction lover and so this clearly appealed to me but also it would appeal to fans of historical fantasy and magical realism.

In addition to the comments above, I'd add that it reads quite a bit like a YA novel. With the exception of the intimate scenes, I think it would be very appropriate for a younger audience (and these days, I'm not even sure the scenes in question would be shocking for most teens).

In my review of this one, I said I would not recommend this one to fantasy lovers, or previous fans of her’s. This is such a departure and falls much more into historical fiction/horror for me. Fantasy, which can be dark, also has more beauty and magic in it in general and this was just one long dark story.

Did anyone notice how often the word”f—“ was used? I found this distracting and I really wouldn’t want my sons reading this.

As stated above, I would definitely recommend it to those who are fans of historical fiction and I also feel those who enjoy literary fiction would want to read this book.

Ditto on the above, historical fiction and mystical magic. I would hope that the marketing expresses how the lens of magic enhances the fictional aspect, as it truly does.

I think it reads primarily as historical fiction with some fantasy and magic. It might be regarded as YA but I think it could be a good read for adults too.

Barduga fans. Historical Fiction and Speculative Fiction Fans. However this is a departure from the authors other novels, so some her fans could be disappointed. I was expecting that this would end up another serial, with volume 2 to come. Very well researched history of life in Spain, particularly focussed on class, women, and those not Catholic.

Readers of historical fiction and magical realism would love this, I would think.

Magical/speculative fiction fans for sure but I think readers of more traditional historical fiction would like it also. Those who enjoy mysticism and spirituality as well

I agree with readers who cited readers of historical fiction, fantasy and character driven novels would appreciate reading The Familiar. However, I would also add readers who enjoy a "twist," namely that Santangel IS the Familiar and not Luzia! The book cover shows a woman's hand, and Salem witches were mostly woman with cats, so when Santangel is identified as the Familiar...Whoa!
