I nod, wrap
my arms around
myself, head back

My stomach empty

spirit broken

I look for a place to rest in

a small park where

Mutti used to bring me to play.

Our old flat overlooks
the fountain, the trees, the grass

and I try to imagine running
back home

try to imagine having
somewhere to go

and I have to blink back
my tears.

The benches look
too hard, too public

especially with brown-shirted soldiers
patrolling the area in pairs

roughing up
anyone they feel like

so I opt for the moss-covered

ground beside a linden tree

pulling my coat

close

hoping to steal

some much-needed sleep

because nothing else can take
today's failure away.
