About this Book

Print Excerpt

Smiling, Romeo took a step away from her and leaned back against the wall. "Now, you say we Montagues are fiendish, depraved, and take great delight in sin. You are sure of this?"

"If I say yes, you promise not to fight me?"

Romeo laughed. "I swear it. You have disarmed me too, my lady."

"I can only say what I have heard. I will not lie. You are the first Montague I have met. So you must show me the truth as it really is, my lord."

"Very well. Here we are alone, madam, but you are safe." He stepped closer and brushed her cheek with his thumb again. "I want nothing to keep your secret. I do not want a kiss. I do not even want your name." He reached out and pressed her mask back into place, retying it with nimble fingers.

"I shall trust you, then," said Rosaline, looking up at him and meeting his eye. "I don't believe you would betray me for all that you are a Montague."
