Why do we say "Take my word for it"?

Well-Known Expressions

Take my word for it

Meaning:

You can accept my word as truth

Background:

We cannot find a source for this expression in any of my books of phrases, which makes sense when you think about it as this expression must be as old as human speech. It cannot have been long from the time the first grunts developed into human speech before someone was conning someone out of something with a variation of this expression!
