Michael Stern Hart, founder of Project Gutenberg, dies aged 64

Sep 08 2011

Michael Stern Hart, founder and head of Project Gutenberg, who many consider invented the ebook, died this week aged 64.

On July 4 1971, having been granted access to significant computing power at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he was inspired to type the text of a free printed copy of the U.S. Declaration of Independence into a computer, and to transmit it to other users on the computer network. Thus Project Gutenberg, recognized as one of the earliest and longest-lasting online literary projects, was founded.
