2014 Costa Award Winners Announced

The category winners in the 2014 Costa Book Award have been announced, with Ali Smith winning in the Novel category with How to be Both, a Man Booker Prize shortlisted novel about grief and the experience of making and appreciating art.

The Costa Book Award is now in its 43rd year – it was previously named the Whitbread Prize. It is open solely to authors who live in the UK and Ireland. The winners are:

Fiction: Ali Smith, How To Be Both

First Novel: Emma Healey, Elizabeth Is Missing

Biography: Helen Macdonald, H Is For Hawk

Poetry: Jonathan Edwards, My Family And Other Superheroes

Children's: Kate Saunders, Five Children On the Western Front
