The novel explains the hardships of being a peasant in Medieval times, and having no rights or freedoms to your name. For example, when Crispin is blamed for stealing from John Aycliffe, he has no opportunity to share his side of the story. This book has its good and bad points. At times, the book was uninteresting and dull (mainly towards the beginning), but once you get into the book, it becomes adventurous and exciting. The characters are full of life and personality, and the book has many plot twists.
