Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs
by Johann Hari
Eye Opening (3/23/2017)
I would give this book a higher number, if I could. This book is about the war on drugs. A war we have been fighting for more than 100 years, and have still not stopped or even dented it. Reading the book forces the reader to open their mind and realize that the war can never be won, but people can be saved, if we choice to change the way we fight. Now we put people in jail, which costs money, but is not effective. Some places, like Portugal have tried a different way and it works. Drugs are given to people who need them as well as talks with psychologists, housing and jobs. They are spending less money, but getting effective treatment for their people.
I did not realize that the U.S. forced the world to join us in the drug war. I have always wondered why we even fight it. This book tells the reader how we need to change our ideas of drugs because we have been told lies. The only people who gain by our war are the drug cartels and criminals.
I hope this book can change some minds.
After reading this book, I wonder if this is another way our politicians get money. Are they paid by the criminals?
