Spanning three generations, "The Last Russian Doll" beautifully encapsulates the story of one Russian family during the Soviet Era in what is perhaps the most remarkable novel ever written about the period. Utilizing dual timelines, the author masterfully weaves forward from the beginning and backwards from the ending to bring together a breath-taking story in which nothing is what it seems, and surprises lurk around each corner. Expertly crafted characters lure the reader in from the very beginning in a setting not experienced since "Doctor Zhivago". In addition, the use of fairytales and folklore add an element to the novel few others have dared approach. One of the most intriguing novels of the year, "The Last Russian Doll" is a five-star read not to be missed.

“Mercury Pictures Presents” is a magnificent tribute to the immigrant community and their contributions to the nation’s war propaganda efforts in Hollywood during the 1940s. The cast of characters include architects, poets, actors, carpenters, screenwriters, as well as a very entertaining group of older Italian aunts who make up Maria’s support network. Each of these are a story unto themselves and the author has dedicated ample space for each.

Expertly written, “Mercury Pictures Presents” by Anthony Marra is a tale that weaves itself across two continents and through several decades with a style that incorporates both wit and thoughtfulness. At once both excruciatingly painful and delightfully humorous, it is a unique story that reminds us we are a nation of immigrants who have each contributed to the rich and colorful tapestry of American history.

What begins as a terrifying run through a dark tropical forest ultimately transforms into an island-hopping journey throughout the Caribbean as Rachel, a runaway, searches desperately for the five children slavery had stolen from her. With no idea where they may be, or if they are even alive, Rachel perseveres. Forced to rely on the kindness of strangers, as well as the ruthlessness of overseers, she will not stop until she knows their fate. From Barbados to British Guiana, and ultimately to Trinidad, this is the story of the unconquerable love of a mother who will stop at nothing to reunite her family.

It is impossible to describe the range of emotions one will experience while reading this extraordinarily fast-paced story. Feelings ranging from fear to despair to elation are all to be expected as one accompanies Rachel on this epic journey. In the end, however, one cannot help but feel they have experienced a literary adventure not easily rivaled.

A five-star debut novel by Eleanor Shearer that will leave the reader breathless at the end!
