In the Upper Country

IN the Uppeer Country (4/2/2023)
I could not put this book down. Having grown up in Niagara Falls, New York, I had no idea that the end of the Underground Railroad ended at the Canadian border. It was until a few years ago on a visit to Lewiston, New YOrk that I saw a memorial statue to the those who managed to escape to freedom across the Niagara River. Kai Thomas’s book is filled with vibrant characters and settings which are so well crafted that I could easily see them in my mind. In particular , his stories within stories, lent a whole other dimension to the history of salve refugees in Canada. I totally recommend this book as a remarkable window into history and to those who managed to escape slavery by courageously crossing the NIagara River into Canada to be free.
