Everything We Never Knew: A Novel
by Julianne Hough
Bland (7/27/2024)
Everything We Never Knew is the type of book with topics and themes I'm generally attracted to…metaphysical, new age, and characters that experience unexplainable phenomena. However, I couldn't get hooked. The writing was bland. I yearned for more descriptive details of Lexi's otherworldly experiences. The writing did not suck me into the story. Everything We Never Knew was a meh read for me.
One's Company: A Novel
by Ashley Hutson
Well written, but… (5/4/2022)
One’s Company is a well written book, but I struggled to connect with the main character, Bonnie Lincoln. Her desire to create and live an alternate life (more like an alternate reality) immersed in a sitcom was far fetched and too imaginative (borderline madness) for me. As a reader who savors well written books, I was disappointed. I wouldn’t recommend One’s Company.
The Sunset Route: Freight Trains, Forgiveness, and Freedom on the Rails in the American West
by Carrot Quinn
Beautifully Written! (7/21/2021)
The Sunset Route by Carrot Quinn is one of the most beautifully written memoirs I have ever read. Carrot writes using brilliant figurative language and vivid imagery that convinces readers to ride along on her journey through a tragic childhood and trips across the country on freight trains. I smelled the diesel fumes, felt her fears and loneliness, saw the blackest skies and brightest stars, tasted her hunger, and heard her most inner thoughts. Carrot had me from page one. I was completely engrossed and couldn't put The Sunset Route down. I highly recommend this book!
