Dr. Anna Malaika Tubbs has crafted an insightful work in which she expertly presents how pervasive patriarchy is in the United States. What is so innovative is her framing mechanism as she uses her own and her mother's personal experiences to illustrate patriarchal concepts. I enjoyed reading this text, especially her discussion of sexism and racism. Too often, authors present all women as being overwhelming united when that has not been the case as race has always been a significant factor. I think all people of all races should read this work. The first step to dismantling a system is becoming aware of it as Dr. Tubbs states.

The Secret History of the Rape Kit is an interesting nonfiction read. It is well-written and moves at a comfortable pace. I was not aware of the origins of the rape kit. The author uncovers the woman, Marty Goddard, behind its creation and the difficulties she faced throughout her professional life and personal life. I think everyone should read this book and become more knowledgeable about the prevalence of sexual assault and how survivors can be re-victimized by ill treatment at the hands of those who are obligated to provide aid.

Smothermoss by Alisa Alering is an eclectic novel set in the 1980s in Pennsylvania. I would categorize it as a spooky horror novel with magical/fantastical elements. I was often left confused as the reader is dropped into the story unaware of the overall situation; however, eventually, I was able to piece together enough information to follow the story. I think fans of non-gory horror novels would enjoy this novel, and it reminded me of some of the short stories in the anthology, Never Whistle at Night.
