The Griffin Sisters' Greatest Hits: A Novel
by Jennifer Weiner
Sisters are complicated! (5/22/2025)
Interestingly for me—this book was set in Haddonfield NJ and Philadelphia where I used to live and worked at Pennsylvania Hospital. Brought back lots of memories. I loved the plot of two sisters with different looks and talents and a man in the middle and a daughter to the rescue. Although a book with sadness, it made me happy and added insight to the understanding of families and of rock and roll. I loved it. And I’d love for someone to treat me like a souffle. She’s a marvelous writer, understands people and the book was a book from my time of life!

Life is tough and rich (5/22/2025)
This book was written so very differently—kind of “free thoughts” of each character—that at first I had trouble following the story line. But oh the feelings it evoked made up for that! A poignant story of an unwed mom of twins (who are quite amusing) and now delivering another child. I once worked in an inner city alcohol program for women and it brought back tremendous memories of touch life situations that those without resources must face. I am not sure if others would have the emotional response that I did but it’s worth considering just for the emotional appeal.
Ordinary Love: A Novel
by Marie Rutkoski
Complicated women (5/21/2025)
I enjoyed this a lot--addressed gay and traditional relationships. But mostly I enjoyed the detailed development of the two main characters and the struggle to understand the nuances of each. The women were vibrant and realistic and helped me understand the subtleties of love and nuances of female/female relationships.
The Girls of Good Fortune: A Novel
by Kristina McMorris
Made me think about my perspective of Chinese culture (4/10/2025)
This wonderful book tells the story of discrimination against Chinese and other oriental people groups and I think that is a tale that hasn’t gotten much attention. It is also a tale of the bravery of a woman for her child and although some of it seemed a bit “over the top,” I found it inspiring and convincing. Who are we as humans? Why do we love with such intensity? Why have women had to stand up to so much? I must admit to a penchant for stories about Chinese women having once traveled to China and realized a) how different that culture is and b) how lucky we are in the USA.
