Larry Niven is a prolific (over 70 books and collections) and award-winning (Hugo, Locus, Ditmar, and Nebula) science fiction author. Many of his books and short-stories are set in an imaginary future called "Known Space". His most popular series is "Ringworld", describing the exploration of an enormous artificial space habitat, built as a ring around a sun.
