How did the churches that the Supremes grew up in shape who they ultimately became?

Odette, Clarice, and Barbara Jean attend three very different churches. Did growing up in these particular churches help shape them into the women they ultimately became?

I loved the use of the three different churches. It provided reasons for the characters decisions and actions.

Oh yes, I think their churches really helped shape their lives and viewpoints. Belief is very important in everyone's life and the type of church you grow up in has a huge impact on us. It helps to shape our morals and our conscience. I think that if Clarice had been in one of the other churches, she might have been able to kick Richmond out long before she did. Her church had a double standard for men and women and pretty much guided women to overlook men's dalliances, where one of the other churches wouldn't have stood for such behavior.

The different churches were a wonderful device to help show the different personalities. But it is significant that they all were religious and had a religious community of which they were part. They were more alike than different in some ways. I loved the description of Holy family as the good news-be kind church, Calvary as the bad news church and First Baptist as the new clothes gospel. It was very witty commentary.
